ABOUT THE NEW SIX
ABOUT THE NEW SIX
To be living in a country that has welcomed thousands of newcomers and refugees yearning for a brighter life, we took it as an obligation to ensure that the youth receive the social comforts and supports that they need to succeed.
In 2012, we took our firsts step into bridging our fellow Eritrean newcomers and refugees with the social environment of Canada through an international language spoken by all – soccer. We started to compete once a week with less than 12 players and it quickly cultivated into a community of newcomer and black youth in the GTA. We are humbled and pleased to say that we now have over 150 youth from all over the city joining us for our weekly games/tournaments and practice.
The New Six is in an ongoing process of expanding our demographics and are constantly finding ways to unite the Eritrean newcomers in a way enjoyable for all! With the expansion of our programs, we make it our goal to further diversify our community. This means not only limiting our resources to Eritrean newcomer youth but to welcome all newcomer and black youth, with our primary focus being on marginalized groups.
Our plan is to continue expanding our projects and assure that we are doing our best to provide youth with learning opportunities in a fun and engaging manner. Our partnership with Trent University Nursing students has moved to a new digital model. Now with the COVID-19 pandemic our placement students are delivering workshops virtually during this unprecedented time. The nurses are focusing on mental health, access to health care + deliverables and serving the needs of the community.
The rewards of soccer are extensive and serve our youth to a great extent in their social, active, and learning journey. Our aim is to give our youth the required resources in order to prosper in their new home through the means of mentorship programs, educational workshops, and local community initiatives . Our core mandate is to ensure that the leaders of tomorrow are receiving everything they need to grow into that leader today. The New Six is more than just a soccer club. We are a social movement paving the path to success for our youth.
